Florida Virtual School (FLVS) Full Time Elementary School students and their families pose with a Shrek character during a field trip to Universal Orlando in Orlando, in February. More than 800 students and parents, along with 40 FLVS team members, spent the day exploring the park together at an in-person meetup open to both Full Time and Flex students.

One of the biggest questions families ask about online learning is simple: Will my child still have opportunities to make friends and feel connected? The answer is a resounding yes. From exciting clubs and engaging virtual events to in-person meetups and student-led activities, Florida Virtual School (FLVS) students have access to a wide range of opportunities for students to connect, collaborate, and create lasting friendships.

Whether taking individual courses through FLVS Flex or enrolled in Full Time Public Schools (FLVS Full Time), there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. Some students connect through shared interests in a club, others build confidence by participating in enrichment activities, in-person events, or hands-on learning experiences.

With more than 80 student clubs and activities, for kindergarten through 12th grade students in both FLVS Full Time and FLVS Flex, there is something for just about every interest.

Clubs are offered across a wide range of categories, including academic, arts, athletic, career-focused, honors, language, service, special interest, and technology-based. Students can explore what they already love or discover something completely new while building community along the way.

Things to Know Before Joining

  • Most clubs meet online via Zoom, so students can join from anywhere

  • Meetings typically happen once or twice a month

  • Formats vary by club, but many include conversation, collaboration, projects, and student leadership opportunities

  • Some clubs offer special events, competitions, or in-person experiences, depending on the club and school year

  • Students must be actively enrolled in at least one FLVS course to join

  • Most clubs welcome both FLVS Flex and Full Time students, though some have specific eligibility requirements

  • Full club descriptions and participation details are available in the "Find a Club" section of the Clubs webpage

Students interested in joining an FLVS club, don't miss Club Rush, the annual virtual event where families can explore available clubs they are passionate about. Club Rush is their chance to discover new interests, meet fellow students, and find the perfect club.

Families with additional questions about student clubs and activities can contact Student Activities.

Field Trips

FLVS also offers in-person opportunities that help bring the online learning experience to life. Across Florida, students and families can participate in field trips, meetups, and other events designed to support social development, spark connections, and enrich learning beyond the virtual classroom. These opportunities are open to both FLVS Full Time and FLVS Flex students.

Field trips give students the chance to learn through hands-on experiences at real-world destinations. FLVS highlights examples such as science-focused venues, the Kennedy Space Center, zoos, and other educational locations that connect directly to what students are learning. These experiences can make learning more memorable while also giving students the chance to spend time with classmates and families in person.

Each year, FLVS Full Time middle school students have the chance to come together for an unforgettable day at SeaWorld. This annual field trip is filled with exciting adventures, hands-on learning, and meaningful connections. From thrilling rides to fascinating marine life exhibits, it is a perfect blend of fun, education, and community. FLVS Flex field trip announcements are posted in Educator, the FLVS centralized hub for educational content and communication, by grade or subject areas. All field trips and meetups for FLVS Full Time students are included in the weekly newsletter sent each Sunday.

For specific questions, families can contact Student Activities.

Regional Meetups

FLVS Full Time elementary and middle school hosts regional meetups across the state, where students and families can gather in their local communities. These events range from casual park days and beach cleanups to creative crafting sessions and themed playdates. These events are all about connection, and are a great way for students and families to make friends in their area and build a sense of community with their FLVS teachers.

“It’s so fun to see my friends because I usually just see them online," said Emilie Semenchenko, an FLVS Full Time sixth grader. "I really like to come to these, because I like to communicate and play with them.”

In past regional meetups, students played on the playground together, made friendship bracelets, enjoyed crafts and activities, and played games with a giant, colorful parachute, organized by the FLVS Full Time elementary teachers.

“My children have met many friends through FLVS,” said Greequel Simpson, parent of a sixth and ninth-grader in FLVS Full Time. “They love to come to the meetups to see them (their friends), and as a parent, I encourage them to keep in touch with their friends from FLVS. Due to the relationships we've built at  the meetups, we continue to see their friends even outside of organized events.”

College Tours

FLVS Full Time high school students have the opportunity to attend in-person visits to statewide colleges and universities where they can tour campuses alongside their peers, building connections with fellow students and families. During these tours, students can get a real feel for campus life and future possibilities.

FLVS Foundation-Hosted Events

As part of its mission to expand access to high-quality online education, the FLVS Foundation funds a variety of activities each year for all FLVS students. These events, which include the Artful Expressions Showcase, also foster meaningful connections. To stay up to date on these events, follow the FLVS Foundation on Facebook.
