Helping Your Child Thrive: A Checklist for Families

This checklist is designed to support you in guiding your child’s learning, growth, and success. It includes simple, practical ways to stay involved, from building reading habits to setting goals and staying connected with school.

Academic Support

Support reading with age-appropriate home activities and daily reading time.

Encourage your child to visit the library and help them select books of interest.

Ensure a consistent time and place for homework and assignments.

Provide access to all necessary materials and supplies.

Designate a distraction-free workspace with daily access to a computer, phone, and internet.

Discuss schoolwork regularly and ask your child to explain concepts (e.g., math homework).

Attend workshops or training sessions to help support learning at home.

Emphasize the value of education and striving to do one's best.

Ensure your child attends all required classes, live lessons, tutoring, interventions, and services.

Actively monitor grades and progress; collaborate with teachers as needed.

Promote participation in extracurricular and after-school activities.

Ensure your child is punctual and prepared for the school day.

Citizenship & Behavior

Teach and model respect, responsibility, hard work, and positive behavior.

Establish and maintain a regular daily routine.

Reinforce school behavioral expectations.

Encourage your child to take responsibility for actions and decisions.

Monitor and limit television or screen time as appropriate.

Setting Goals

Express the belief in your child's ability to be successful.

Encourage your child to set short- and long-term educational goals.

Celebrate academic accomplishments.

Communication With School

Maintain regular contact with teachers and school staff, at least monthly, with the homeroom teacher via approved channels.

Prepare for and attend progress updates, Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, and other academic planning sessions.

Participate in school events such as open houses, fairs, performances, sports, curriculum nights, and field trips.

Volunteer when possible.

Administrative Responsibilities

Keep home address, phone number(s), and email current; update within 30 days of any change (must match proof of residency in FOCUS).

Notify the FLVS Scholarship team if your child is awarded a Florida School Choice Scholarship after enrollment, following these instructions .

Note: Per state guidelines, Florida students enrolled in public school districts, including FLVS Full Time, are not eligible for scholarship funding. Families who choose to accept a scholarship will need to unenroll from Full Time and re-enroll in FLVS Flex courses.

Complete back-to-school (compliance) forms at the start of the school year via FOCUS. (Full Time Only)

Ensure your child completes progress monitoring three times per year and provide transportation for both progress monitoring and end-of-year state testing, as scheduled by districts or test sites (dates/times set by districts/test sites). (Full Time Only)
