Screen Time vs. Learning Time: Understanding Online Education
Screen Time vs. Learning Time: Understanding Online Education
October 19, 2026

An FLVS Full Time elementary student completes coursework from home. Florida Virtual School combines online instruction with hands-on learning activities, live lessons, and teacher support designed to keep students engaged both on- and off-screen.
If you're considering online school for your young learner, one question likely tops your list: "How much time will my child spend in front of a screen?"
It's a fair question, and a thoughtful one. Parents today are rightly cautious about how much time their kids spend with devices. But when it comes to Florida Virtual School (FLVS) Full Time Public Schools, the answer may be more reassuring than you expect. For families considering a school change at semester break, understanding how learning works in an online environment can help make the decision easier.
Not All Screen Time Is the Same
Think about the difference between a child scrolling through videos and a child solving a math puzzle, answering a question in a live online class, or recording themself reading aloud. Both involve a screen, but they are very different experiences.
Passive activities like watching entertainment or scrolling social media ask very little of a child's mind. Online learning at FLVS is built the opposite way. It's designed to engage students in active instruction, collaboration, critical thinking, and skill development. Your child isn't just consuming content. They're thinking, responding, creating, and growing.
The Numbers
Many parents worry that online school means a full day glued to a monitor. In reality, total hours and effort are comparable to what's required at a traditional school. On average:
Students in grades K-3 have about 20 hours of work to complete each week.
Students in grades 4-12 have about 25 hours of work each week.
Just as important, those hours aren't all spent on a computer. There is always a balance between working online and completing offline projects. Students pair their digital coursework with hands-on assignments, physical activity, and real-world experiences that bring learning to life. Here are some examples of real activities from elementary courses:
Drawing in a sketchbook for an art lesson
Doing “step-ups” on the stairs to feel what it is like to be a mountain climber for Physical Education
Going outside and finding a rock to paint, inspired by la Cueva de las Manos, for Spanish
Because families have flexibility in how the week is structured, you can also build in breaks, outdoor play, and movement in ways that fit your child's needs.
FLVS Full Time Elementary and Middle School hosts regional meetups across the state, where students and families can gather in their local communities. These events range from casual park days and beach cleanups to creative crafting sessions and themed playdates. These events are all about connection and are a great way for students and families to make friends in their area and build a sense of community with their FLVS teachers.
“My children have met many friends through FLVS,” said Greequel Simpson, parent of a seventh and ninth grader in FLVS Full Time. “They love to come to the meetups to see them (their friends), and as a parent, I encourage them to keep in touch with their friends from FLVS. Due to the relationships we've built at the meetups, we continue to see their friends even outside of organized events.”
Certified Teachers Every Step of the Way
One of the biggest misconceptions about online school is that kids are left to teach themselves. That couldn't be further from the truth.
All FLVS Full Time teachers are Florida-certified and regularly interact with students by phone, email, text, and live instruction. Students are encouraged to reach out whenever they need help of any kind, so your child never has to feel stuck or alone. In fact, they get plenty of opportunity for one-on-one support that they might not have received in a traditional setting.
That means the screen is simply a tool for connection. Behind it is a caring, qualified educator who knows your child and wants to see them succeed.
Live Lessons: Learning Together in Real Time
Some of the most valuable screen time at FLVS happens during live lessons. These are real-time, interactive classes where students and teachers connect, and they're about far more than covering material. They're about connecting, engaging, and growing together.
Typically about an hour long and held via Zoom, live lessons give students the opportunity to learn alongside classmates, ask questions in real time, and receive immediate feedback. Through discussions, polls, and interactive activities, students engage more deeply with their coursework while building meaningful connections with peers and teachers.
The benefits go beyond the virtual classroom. Students who regularly participate in live lessons often demonstrate stronger academic performance, greater retention of course content, and increased confidence in applying what they learn to new concepts and challenges.
Course Activities Designed to Engage
FLVS courses include a wide range of diverse activities, providing a fun and rigorous learning experience for different learning styles. Created to state and national standards, the courses feature:
Interactive games and quizzes
Engaging video and audio clips
Practical written lessons and assignments
Because the variety is built in, students move between listening, doing, writing, and playing. A child who learns best by seeing, hearing, or doing will find something that clicks. That variety keeps young learners curious and makes learning feel less like a marathon of staring at a screen.
Even in our Computer Science course, students will have hands-on assignments. Did you ever think that going outside to take pictures could teach your child about iterations in coding? In our course, it can.
The Bottom Line
At FLVS, online learning is intentionally designed to balance digital instruction with offline activities, real-world experiences, and teacher support, helping students stay engaged without spending every moment in front of a screen.
So the next time you ask, "How much time will my child spend in front of a screen?" try asking a different question: "How will that time be spent?" At FLVS, the answer is learning, connecting, and growing.
