A new law, which will go into effect on July 1, requires Florida teenagers (under the age of 18) to take an approved Driver Education course before they can obtain a learner’s license.
Florida Virtual School (FLVS) offers a tuition-free online course (with some exceptions for scholarship students) that meets this requirement, is available statewide, and students can earn a 0.5 elective credit. To ensure the mastery of safe driving skills and that students comprehend the course material fully before getting behind the wheel, we have dedicated, certified teachers offering one-on-one support. More than 900,000 students have completed the course since its inception.
Plus, did you know that FLVS students can take the Florida Class E Knowledge exam (learner’s license exam) for free after completing our Driver Education course?
This comprehensive course teaches students the rules of the road while also fulfilling the state’s Traffic Law Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course licensing requirement. Upon completion, students may qualify for insurance discounts and can access “behind-the-wheel training” in many counties through the Florida Safety Council.
What will students learn?
During the course, students learn:
Real-world driving knowledge: Through simulated driving activities, students gain practical experience.
Traffic signs and laws: Understanding how to read traffic signs and the laws that govern our roads.
Safe driving techniques and skills: Essential skills for collision avoidance and safe driving in various conditions.
Diverse driving environments: How to navigate different types of roads and weather conditions.
To obtain a learner’s license, after completing the Driver Education course, students must visit their local license office. The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) website includes a checklist of the documents students need to take with them.
