Florida Department of Education Contests
Celebrate Through Creativity
Throughout the school year, Florida Virtual School (FLVS) participates in state‑recognized events and contests designated by the Florida Department of Education (FDOE). These opportunities invite students to explore history, culture, and community through art and essay contests. FLVS students enrolled in Full Time and Individual Courses (Flex) are encouraged to participate.
Hispanic Heritage Month (September)
During Hispanic Heritage Month, students have an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic Americans through creative expression.
Student Art Contest: Open to Florida students in Kindergarten through third grade, this contest encourages young artists to express Hispanic heritage through visual storytelling.
Student Essay Contest: Open to students in grades four through 12 attending any Florida school, the essay contest highlights the impact of Hispanic leaders, culture, and history through student-written reflections.
Deadline: September 21, 2026 no later than 5 p.m. EST
Native American Heritage Month (November)
During Native American Heritage Month, students are encouraged to explore the traditions, histories, and enduring contributions of Native American communities through art and writing.
Student Art Contest: Open to Florida students in kindergarten through third grade, this contest encourages young artists to create original, two-dimensional artwork inspired by Native American Heritage Month.
Student Essay Contest: Open to students in grades four through 12 attending any Florida school, the essay contest invites students to reflect on the impact of Native American leaders, history, and culture.
Deadline: TBD for 2027
Black History Month (February)
During Black History Month, students are invited to examine the achievements and impact of African Americans and reflect on their significance through art and writing.
Student Art Contest: Open to Florida students in kindergarten through third grade, this contest encourages young artists to create original, two-dimensional artwork inspired by Black History Month.
Student Essay Contest: Open to students in grades four through 12 attending any Florida school, the essay contest invites students to reflect on the impact of African American leaders, history, and culture.
