Parental Process for Exemption Request

  2. Parental Process for Exemption Request

Pursuant to s. 1002.20, F.S.; A public school student whose parent makes written request to the school principal shall be exempted from the teaching of reproductive health or any disease, including HIV/AIDS, in accordance with the provisions of s. 1003.42(3).  The courses in the table below contain lesson content or assignments which cover material that can be exempted upon parental written request.

After you have reviewed the course lesson content and assignment table below and you wish to submit a request for exemption, please follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Upon placement in the course(s) you will find the course Instructional Leader/Assistant Principal name and contact information on the teacher announcement page.
  • Step 2: Send an email that includes your student’s first and last name, grade level, teacher name to the Instructional Leader/Assistant Principal with the course you are requesting your student receive lesson/assignment exemption from.
  • Step 3: Upon receipt of the email the Instructional Leader/Assistant Principal will coordinate the exemption(s) with the teacher.  Any assignment exemption will appear with an “ex” in your child’s gradebook.
  • Step 4: The Instructional Leader/Assistant Principal will respond with approval that covers the lesson content that your child is now able to skip.

Sexual Activity Lesson 3.02 On lesson page 5, lesson instruction specifically referring to sexual activity can be exempted. All other parts of the lesson and the assessment are to be completed.
Intimate Relationships- Deciding to have sex Lesson 4.02 On lesson page 5, lesson instruction specifically referring to the Love is Respect website can be exempted. All other parts of the lesson and the assessment are to be completed.
STI/STD Lesson 6.03 On lesson pages 1-4, instruction specifically referring to STIs/STDs can be exempted. All other parts of the lesson are to be completed. In the assessment, two quiz questions can be exempted.
M/J Fitness - Grade 6
Puberty Lesson 5.01 On lesson page 2, instruction specifically referring to puberty can be exempted. All other parts of the lesson and the assessment are to be completed.
Puberty/Sexual Activity Lesson 5.04 On lesson page 3, instruction specifically referring to puberty and sexual activity can be exempted. All other parts of the lesson and the assessment are to be completed.
M/J Comprehensive PE - Grade 6/7
Puberty/Sexual Activity Lesson 5.04 On lesson page 3, instruction specifically referring to puberty and sexual activity can be exempted. All other parts of the lesson and the assessment are to be completed.
M/J Comprehensive PE - Grade 7/8
AIDS
Puberty/Sexual Activity
Lesson 5.04 On lesson pages 2-3, instruction specifically referring to AIDS, puberty and sexual activity can be exempted. All other parts of the lesson and the assessment are to be completed.
Life Management Skills
Puberty/Adolescence, Sexual Health, Sexual Health Risks Lesson 2.02 All instruction in the lesson and the assessment can be exempted.
Contraception, Abstinence Lesson 2.03 All instruction in the lesson and the assessment can be exempted.
Sexually Transmitted Infections/Diseases
HIV and AIDS
Lesson 2.04 On lesson pages 1-5, instruction specifically referring to STIs/STDs and contracting disease during sexual activity can be exempted. All other parts of the lesson are to be completed. In the assessment, three quiz questions can be exempted.
Self-Exam of Reproductive Organs Lesson 2.05 On lesson pages 4-5, instruction specifically referring to preventative self-exams of reproductive organs can be exempted. All other parts of the lesson are to be completed. In the assessment, questions about breast cancer and testicular cancer can be exempted.
