November Is Novel Writing Month: Let’s Write Together

Nov 7, 2025, 14:29 by Kathryn Hodgins
Celebrate student creative writing with FLVS during Novel Writing Month, 30 days to draft a novel, explore imagination, and share your story.

We’re turning the page on ordinary and diving into the extraordinary with National Novel Writing Month. Whether you dream in dragons, journal your real-life adventures, or just want to see where your imagination takes you, this is your moment.

All Kindergarten–12 Full Time and Flex students are invited to take on the challenge: write the first draft of a novel in 30 days. No pressure and no grades. Just an opportunity to discover your voice.

Students who want to take it a step further are invited to submit their work for inclusion in the next edition of the FLVS Virge literary magazine, a semi-annual digital publication of collected works by FLVS students.

Why Writing Matters

Writing isn’t just a skill. It’s a superpower. It helps us:

  • Think critically and express ideas clearly
  • Explore emotions and build empathy
  • Strengthen communication and storytelling abilities
  • Unlock imagination and personal growth

Whether students are crafting fantasy worlds, journaling about real-life experiences, or experimenting with poetry, writing provides them with a space to reflect, connect, and grow.

Writing for Fun Boosts Academic Success

Students who enjoy writing outperform their peers academically, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Additionally, a study published in “Reading and Writing Quarterly” found that students who are motivated to write, especially when given choice and autonomy, demonstrate stronger writing performance and engagement.

How FLVS Supports Student Writers

Writing is woven into every subject, from language arts to social studies, science, and beyond. Our award-winning curriculum encourages students to:

  • Write across genres: essays, narratives, poetry, and research
  • Receive personalized feedback from certified teachers
  • Participate in writing clubs, contests, and creative challenges
  • Build digital portfolios to showcase their growth

We also offer electives such as creative writing and journalism, providing students with additional opportunities to explore their voice and refine their craft.

And there’s no shortage of related clubs to join either! Visit the Clubs and Activities webpage to learn more about the creative writing club, newspaper club, and several others that bring students together to have fun through the written word.
