Florida Virtual School, a leader in online education for more than 28 years, has been awarded first place in the Orlando Business Journal (OBJ) 2025 Best Places to Work in Central Florida, in the giant category, for organizations with over 500 employees, for the second year in a row, recognizing its exceptional commitment to fostering a positive, innovative, and high-performing workplace culture.
"Winning this award two years in a row is a testament to the heart of our organization, our dedicated team," said Dr. Louis Algaze, president and CEO of FLVS. "We've built a culture where every team member feels seen, supported, and empowered to make a difference. This recognition belongs to every educator, administrator, and team member who brings our mission to life every day."
This honor celebrates organizations that have gone above and beyond to create an outstanding workplace culture. The rankings are based on confidential surveys of employees that measure success in team dynamics, trust in leadership, communication, benefits, and more.
Some of the comments from FLVS team members this year include:
“The supportive environment and mentorship from my administration team have been instrumental in my professional growth, allowing me to take on more responsibilities and leadership roles.”
“The organization has provided numerous opportunities for learning and development, from professional development programs to collaborative team projects.”
“Our team exudes dedication, professionalism, and a continuous drive to improve and be on the cutting edge; our students deserve nothing less. We have a supportive environment, as we are ALL IN for our students, our leadership, and the team has a shared commitment to excellence.”
“I am so proud to play a role in the success of each and every one of our students. With that as your measure of success, you must be the best.”
FLVS employs 3,500 teachers and professionals, who serve more than 230,000 students across Florida. These students are among the nearly 1.8 million students (51% of all K-12 students in the state) who chose to attend a private, charter, home school, or magnet program instead of their neighborhood public school during the 2023-24 school year, according to data from Step Up for Students.
At FLVS, organizational culture is more than a set of values. It’s a lived commitment to empowering every team member on their professional journey. Through a suite of thoughtfully designed initiatives, the school fosters a workplace where growth, recognition, and balance thrive.
Key programs include:
Virtual wellness offerings that promote holistic health and mental well-being
Peer recognition platforms that celebrate individual contributions and team successes
Leadership development tracks that cultivate innovation and career advancement
Flexible work arrangements that support a healthy integration of work and life
Together, these efforts reflect a shared dedication to collaboration, continuous improvement, and keeping students at the heart of every decision. By investing in its people, FLVS strengthens its mission—and its impact.
"Culture isn't just a buzzword here, it's our foundation," added Katerina Alfaro-Lopez, senior director of human resources. "We've worked intentionally to create a space where people thrive. This award validates the care and effort our teams put into making Florida Virtual School truly a great place to work.”
In addition to the OBJ award, FLVS has also been recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best-In-State Employers for Florida in 2023 and 2024.
