Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information for Students & Parents

As the state’s online public school district, Florida Virtual School (FLVS) is available to support students and families due to school closures and the ongoing impacts of COVID-19. We’re here to ensure students are able to continue their education.

Florida Virtual School is a free, fully accredited, statewide public school district offering more than 190 courses to Kindergarten-12 students. Our certified teachers use a variety of personalized instructional programs to create individualized educational plans for every student.

Choose Your Online School Option

Florida Virtual School offers a variety of flexible and full-time options. Students seeking online education options due to COVID-19 disruptions are encouraged to enroll in FLVS Flex or FLVS Global. Students seeking enrollment on a full-time basis for the next school year (2020-21) are encouraged to consider FLVS Full Time.

Partial vs. Full Course Load Student takes one or more courses online with FLVS Flex to supplement traditional courses at his/her regular school. Student takes one or more courses online with FLVS Flex to supplement traditional courses at his/her homeschool education. Student takes all required courses for graduation online with FLVS Full Time, which is considered the student’s school of record. Student takes one or more courses (up to six at a time) online with FLVS Global School which may supplement either traditional courses at his/her regular school or homeschool instruction.
Student Type Student may be also enrolled in a brick-and-mortar school (public, private, or charter). Student is recognized as public, private, or charter school student by the Florida Department of Education. Student is officially registered as a home education student through their district school office. Student is recognized as a homeschool student by the Florida Department of Education. Student is only enrolled with FLVS Full Time and no other brick-and-mortar school. Student is recognized as a public school student by the Florida Department of Education. Student may be also enrolled in a public, private, or charter school, or may be homeschooled.
FLVS Global School is not the school of record.

Home Education is a parent-directed educational option.
FLVS certified teachers provide online instruction, using FLVS award-winning digital curriculum. FLVS Global School certified teachers provide online instruction using FLVS award-winning digital curriculum.
Diploma FLVS Flex does not issue diplomas. FLVS Flex does not issue diplomas, however homeschooling parents will be provided assignments and documentation of coursework throughout the program for the student’s portfolio. Students in FLVS Full Time who meet graduation requirements will earn a State of Florida diploma. FLVS Global School does not issue diplomas, however homeschooling families may use coursework for the student’s portfolio.
Transcripts Brick-and-mortar school counselors are responsible for managing the student’s transcript. Parents/guardians are responsible for managing the student’s portfolio. FLVS Full Time school counselors manage the student’s transcript and issue official report cards. Families who pay FLVS Global School tuition directly are responsible for managing the student’s transcript.
Schools and districts that pay FLVS Global School tuition on behalf of a student are responsible for managing the student’s transcript.

School enrollment follows a traditional admissions and registration process.

Schools and districts may enroll students with FLVS Global, or families may enroll directly.

Schools and districts outside Florida should submit a request to speak to an Account Manager.

Middle and High School Students Families can easily enroll directly with FLVS Global School. Review information about us, or click on Enroll Now at the bottom of the information screen to begin.

Elementary courses will start Fall 2020, and registration will open Summer 2020.

Frequently Asked Questions for Parents and Students

COVID-19 Related Questions:

FLVS teachers will work with individual students who are impacted by COVID-19 to assess and place students in the correct portion/lesson of the course to keep their education on track.
Decisions related to meeting graduation requirements will continue to be determined by the student’s brick-and-mortar school.
Yes, FLVS will work with school counselors to ensure any progress made in a student’s course(s) is transferred from FLVS back to the brick-and-mortar for credit.
When the student is registered in the same class twice (at their school and with FLVS), this is considered a “concurrent enrollment” and must be adjusted prior to enrolling with FLVS by talking to your school counselor about the right courses to take through FLVS.
Each school should have counselors and school administrators still available to verify your FLVS Flex courses in the FLVS registration system, during the prolonged school closures. If course verifications are not taking place within a few days of registration, please contact your school counselor/administration.

Temporarily enrolled public, charter, and private school students should check with their school of record to see if there are course completion deadlines that have to be met.

Homeschooling parents set course completion deadlines for their students while following district guidelines for annual evaluations.

FLVS may be able to provide additional accommodations per a student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP) or Section 504 Plan if the accommodation(s) is/are applicable to the online educational environment. Please note, some accommodations may not be possible to implement in the online educational setting. For additional details, please refer to page 9 of the FLVS Flex Student and Parent Handbook.

If a student has a disability or impairment, this should be indicated when prompted during the FLVS enrollment process. Parents/guardians are responsible for submitting a copy of the student’s most current IEP or 504 Plan to FLVS.

Students with disabilities or impairments enrolled in FLVS Flex must work with their district of enrollment to receive any necessary ESE services, related services, evaluations, annual reviews, re-evaluations, and initial eligibility determinations.

FLVS Flex courses are supplemental to students’ courses at their regular schools. When enrolling in FLVS Flex, students who are enrolled in any brick-and-mortar school, do not have to withdraw from their school of record.

The Florida K-20 Education Code states your child has the right to choose educational options as an opportunity to obtain a high quality education, which includes taking courses online with FLVS.

Yes, FLVS digital courses meet Florida Standards.

FLVS, the district and its schools, is accredited by Cognia and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). SACS CASI is an accrediting division of Cognia.

FLVS core course curriculum has been approved by NCAA.

FLVS Elementary courses should not be used for extra practice or remediation for students who have been promoted to the next grade level. Because our courses are fully accredited and use the same course codes as those at traditional schools, any courses taken with FLVS will appear on your student’s transcripts.
FLVS currently offers Art, Physical Education (PE), Spanish and Computer Science as part of our elementary course offerings.
