- Make sure you are using a compatible browser and disable any parental control filtering software.
- Proxy servers, firewalls and routers can also cause trouble.
- If you are using AOL, make any necessary adjustments.
- Clearing cache and cookies can work wonders.
- If you receive any error messages, try the STOP and then REFRESH browser buttons.
- Shut down your machine, restart and give it another try.
- Compatible browsers are Internet Explorer 5.0, 5.05, and 6.0.
- Do not use the AOL browser.
- Are you sharing a computer with another student? If so, be sure to close down the browser when one finishes working before the next one starts. Otherwise, data held in the program's cache memory from the first student seriously interferes with the functioning of the next. So remember: "If you share a machine, close down the browser in-between."
Browser related issues:
* * * AOL IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR FLVS BECAUSE STUDENTS REPORT SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH IT. * * *
- If you are using AOL as your Internet Service Provider, to get AOL to work with your Internet Explorer browser, connect to the Internet with AOL, minimize its window, launch the browser, then open our website.
- The AOL browser will not work. Use Internet Explorer 5.0, 5,05, or 6.0 instead.
- Important: ALL parental controls must be turned OFF (set to 18 and over) for ALL screen-names on your AOL account. Also, you will find additional parental settings that include chat rooms, news groups, e-mail, etc. These must also be turned off or set to the least restrictive setting.
- In your email account, you will need to remove any restrictions against attachments and embedded images and set parental controls to 18 and over in order to receive email from the school. Otherwise, FLVS email to you is returned to us and we cannot communicate with you.
- Reminder: Your Internet Service Provider (AOL, Road Runner, Bellsouth, etc.) provides your Internet connection. Internet Explorer is a browser program that enables you to navigate the Internet.
General Check Points (check the following)
- Internet Explorer works better than Netscape with all our functions.
- If you do not have Internet Explorer, go to the following site for the free download: http://www.microsoft.com/download
- Is your Internet Service Provider or school where you connect using parental controls and/or firewalls? These do not work with our software.
- All parental controls on any other parental software filters you may have must be turned OFF, including but not limited to Cyber Patrol, Net Nanny, and Surf Watcher. The presence of firewalls or parental control software will cause error messages.
- Are you working on your FLVS courses any while you are at school? Nearly every school uses a proxy server and requires a few start-up adjustments to accommodate FLVS software. Consult your technical coordinator and if the school is using a proxy server, ask to make sure the proxy setting is configured for FTP and HTTP. There are five settings; all five can be turned on, but at the minimum FTP and HTTP must be turned on to operate our software.
