How does FLVS work?

We're glad you asked. Florida Virtual School, the nation's first and largest online public school, is obviously a little different than most traditional schools. Our courses are FREE to students who live in Florida and are available, on a tuition basis, to students who live outside the state. Our teachers are real, the coursework is real, and the grades students receive at the end of each course are real.

The great news is that—from the moment you and your student become interested in an online course—the process is so simple. We'll help your student sign up, get started successfully and begin working with his or her teacher. And, yes, the courses are all online, so students can work according to their own schedules, anytime and anyplace.

First, decide which course is right for your student. You may already know the exact course you're looking for or you may want to browse our Course Catalog. The catalog is customized for YOUR student, based on where you live and the appropriate grade level. Simply select a course, create an FLVS account and complete the sign-up process.

Just remember, in order to finalize the process, your student will need your help. Every parent/guardian must agree to the FLVS Commitments, and every student's school counselor must approve the FLVS enrollment. If your student is homeschooled, you serve as the counselor to approve the enrollment. It's that easy.

You may be asking yourself, "So, where are all the students? Where does my student log into a course when we're ready?"

The answers can be found at myFLVS. This site is loaded with all the information and links a Florida Virtual School student could ever need, including activities, clubs, advisement, school calendar and, of course, the login for their Dashboard.

The Dashboard is where students access the course, submit coursework and review the pace chart, grades and teacher's comments. Once your student has an FLVS account and has signed up for a course, he or she can log into the Dashboard at myFLVS. This is also where you can log into your parent/guardian account.

Each course has a real teacher who guides your student through the coursework, which is broken down into modules.

Teachers are available via phone, text, email and IM from 8 a.m. — 8 p.m., seven days a week.

As your student works through the modules of a course, he or she will connect with the teacher to take exams online and receive discussion-based assessments over the phone. Students do the work at their own pace* and on their own time, but they talk with the teacher via phone at least once per month.

This monthly call provides your student with the opportunity to not only hear a progress report, but also to speak with the teacher and ask questions. Once your student completes the course, grades are made available and sent directly to the school or district of record. They then appear on the transcript, just like all other grades.

*As a part time student at FLVS, you have a voice in deciding how you will work through your course. We call that "establishing pace." When you begin your FLVS experience, you collaborate with your teacher and make a commitment to your pace. For example, you can zoom through your course, never having to wait on the rest of the class. You can plan around your extracurricular activities, never needing to choose between Band and Calculus. You can plan ahead to slow down and take more time on topics that you find difficult, never again worrying about not 'getting' topics like genetics or the Pythagorean theorem. At the end of the day, "any pace" means your pace, as long as you are achieving, learning, and showing forward momentum weekly.
