USDLA Awards Recognize Outstanding Achievements in Distance Learning Individuals, Organizations and Companies Honored for Excellence

The United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) today presented its Year 2000 Distance Learning Awards at a ceremony held in conjunction with TeleCon East/IDLCON 2000, the premier conference and exposition for the distance learning industry.
Thirteen awards were given to distance learning professionals, organizations and companies for excellence in teaching, excellence in programming and outstanding individual achievements. The USDLA awards program was created to acknowledge major accomplishments in distance learning and to highlight those instructors, programs, and distance learning professionals who have achieved excellence in the field. Categories include Higher Education, K-12 Education, Government, Corporate/Business and Healthcare & Telemedicine.
Year 2000 USDLA Distance Learning Awards were presented to the following:
- Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching - Higher Education: Kirk L. Bosworth, teacher of Advanced Placement English at the University of Vermont. Bosworth was selected in recognition of his efforts in converting Advanced Placement curriculum for delivery via distance to remote, rural schools in Vermont and surrounding states. As a former high school Advanced Placement teacher, he succeeded in maintaining a rigorous, high quality course where students are given the knowledge needed to master the AP exam.
- Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching - K -12 Education: Grinell Smith, Integrated Science 8 Instructor at the Center for Communication and Educational Technology at The University of Alabama. Smith has been the Eighth grade Integrated Science instructor for seven years. During this time, he has had contact with thousands of middle school students who e-mail and write him frequently. Smith's energy, professionalism, and ability to present difficult concepts with clarity make him a favorite with his students.
- Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching - Business: Rick Kulp, instructional designer and teacher for IBM Learning Services. Kulp developed "Introduction to Teaching in LearningSpace," a distributed learning course about distance learning, and he has taught the course twenty times to more than two hundred participants from fifteen countries. Kulp is recognized as an expert instructor, and "Introduction to Teaching in LearningSpace" has been the foundation for every successful LearningSpace delivery within IBM.
- Excellence in Distance Learning Programming - Higher Education: The University of Central Florida for aggressively planning and implementing a comprehensive distributed learning program utilizing the World Wide Web, interactive television, media-enhanced instruction, videotape, and radio broadcasts. Issues such as institutional strategic planning, organizational structure, technical infrastructure, faculty development, learner support, support for units, evaluation and research and development activities are thoroughly addressed on a continuing basis.
- Excellence in Distance Learning Programming - Higher Education: Drake University and Skylight Professional Development. Drake University teamed with Skylight, an internationally recognized company dedicated exclusively to the professional development of classroom teachers and school administrators, to create "Balanced Assessment to Increase Student Achievement." This is a graduate course that enables K-12 teachers to turn educational theory into practice. By combining engaging "best practice" videos and print materials, teachers learn strategies for traditional, portfolio, and performance assessments. The program is built on the premise that practical application of course concepts is the key to an effective course experience.
- Excellence in Distance Learning Programming - Government: U.S. Army Armor School in Fort Knox, Kentucky for The Armor Captains Career Course. The course is a three-phased program designed to develop problem solving competencies in mid-level leaders in the Army National Guard. This program uses the latest cognitive and constructivist learning theories, a virtual collaborative environment, and sophisticated student tracking via the Internet.
- Excellence in Distance Learning Programming - K-12: The Florida Online High School in Orlando, Florida, The school has designed and developed an online "any time, any place, any path, any pace" environment which creates a bridge among educational systems in Florida. The school serves the rural dweller, full-time worker, handicapped learner, or any other learner. Supported through a state grant for three years, The Florida Online High School offers 51 courses to more than 2,000 students.
