Florida Virtual School Students Among Top Award Recipients in National Latin Exam 2003
Orlando, FL (April 2003) – The Florida Virtual School (FLVS) proudly announces that first-year Latin student Nicholaus Nelson Goedert received the prestigious “Summa Cum Laude” award in the 2003 National Latin Exam. An additional 13 FLVS students received awards ranging from “Maxima Cum Laude” to “Cum Laude.” This year, over 127,000 middle and high school students worldwide took the exam. The exam is sponsored by the 83-year-old American Classical League and its sister organization the National Classical Junior League.
The Florida Virtual School began offering Latin courses via the Internet in 1999. Today, FLVS’ Latin faculty has grown to two full-time and five adjunct instructors. Over 450 FLVS students are enrolled in Latin, making the school’s Latin program one of the largest in the state of Florida and in the nation.
Veteran Latin instructor Donna Boles is responsible for coordinating student participation in the National Latin Exam. She says that the exam “is a high-level test of a student’s knowledge of Latin grammar, reading comprehension, and Roman customs and mythology.” After a 24-year career in education, Ms. Boles believes that the online environment is ideal for Latin instruction, and that the results of this year’s exam indicate her students’ love of learning and interest in the Latin language.
