Jillian James, student at Florida Virtual School, is featured on the United States Deptartment of Transportation's web site at http://education.dot.gov/contest/2002contest.html for her second place national finish in the Department of Transportation Website Contest.
Alex Landsburg from the Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C. announced the four national winners in January 2003. A plaque was presented to Jillian at the Florida Virtual School Staff meeting on Tuesday, January 28, 2003. Jillian attended the ceremony in the Orange County School Board Meeting Room. She received her plaque from FLVS Executive Director, Julie Young. A letter of congratulations was read to acknowledge the exemplary accomplishment of Jillian James, who has been a student with Florida Virtual School for three years and is currently enrolled in four FLVS classes. Mr. Landsburg's statement also congratulated the support and instruction of FLVS teacher, Mrs. Lynn Kane who served as Jillian's teacher in the FLVS HTML class.
At the presentation, Jillian's family, Mr. and Mrs. James attended. Jillian's father thanked the FLVS teachers for their outstanding work and dedication. Mr. James passionately thanked the teachers for providing the educational services which truly have made a difference in his daughter's life. FLVS guidance counselor, Rosemary DuRocher, provided a brief history of Jillian's success as a Florida Virtual School student, and thanked her family for their support and encouragement in all of Jillian's classes and for the support to her two sisters who also attend FLVS.

The webpage which Jillian created for the contest begins "Welcome to the exciting field of transportation!" and states, "transportation affects all of our daily lives. Cars, trains, buses, jets deliver our food, clothes and other needs. They also help transport us to school, work and friends. Many people are needed to provide these essential services. This website will explore some of the very exciting opportunities in careers in transportation!" .....The website also features an interactive icon in which browsers can enter the areas of air, land, and water transportation. Links to the US Coast Guard are provided as well. The site is quite impressive and according to Jillian, was a "wonderful and fun learning experience."
