With the holiday season fast approaching, there are many promising gifts coming out that are sure to be hits. But before you shop, make sure you know what you are getting.

First is the popular brand of the Sony digital camera, the “Cybershot.” What’s new about the Cybershot is that it now features “smile shutter” wrapped giftstechnology. This is a feature that uses face recognition technology to detect when a subject smiles. You can set it from a shy smile to wide open-mouthed smiles or even turn it off.  You still have to make the subject smile just as before though. You can also choose which person in the picture has the most important smile, such as the center. It seems that the camera’s design isn’t too thrilling compared to the one I own (an earlier version of Cybershot) which has a separate viewfinder. Another drawback is that the smile shutter feature takes pictures of people when they’re smiling, but not always when they’re in the frame. I would go with the regular Cybershot cameras until Sony perfects this smile shutter technology.

For another great gift, try the insanely popular MP3 player, the iPod Nano. The Nano is great if you don’t want to pay a lot of money for an MP3 player, don’t care about video or screen size, and have less than 4 GB of music. But it seems as though some Nanos pose a fire hazard. A Douglasville, Ga., man said his iPod engulfed him up to his chest in flames when it caught on fire as he was listening to it. The Nano uses a particular kind of LION (lithium ion) battery that has been known to catch on fire spontaneously in laptops.

Never buy severely discounted electronics (65% or more) unless they come with a warranty or money back guarantee as these can be recalled and then sold again. Whatever you receive or give for the holidays, make sure to do your research and be safe!
