“Super Tuesday,” February 5, 2008, was said to be one of the most monumental election days of all time. Twenty four states held their primaries and caucuses that day, with over 1,000 delegates each for the Democratic and Republican parties.

Republican Senator John McCain took a surprising lead, winning for Alabama, Arizona, California, and Illinois, among other states. In the Florida primaries in January, he won with 36% of the vote. Also in the race for the Republican Party is Governor Mike Huckabee.

individual casting ballotMayor Rudy Giuliani dropped out on January 29, just after the Florida primaries. After coming in third place, he announced that he would endorse Senator McCain.

Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been running a tight race in the last few elections, and Super Tuesday was no exception. Although some results are still pending, many project that Clinton will ultimately take the lead.

As the race intensifies, candidates are dropping out left and right. For the Democrats, Senator John Edwards resigned on January 30, saying that he would “step aside” for his fellow Democratic candidates.

Unable to climb up out of third place, Edwards announced his resignation in New Orleans, after receiving a meager 14% of the vote in the Florida primaries.

Regardless of which candidate you support, there is no denying that this year’s election is a historic milestone. Never before in the United States have a female and an African American man run for President. Whether or not one of them wins the November elections, it is clear that history has been made.
