Florida TaxWatch released its comprehensive report on Florida Virtual School in November, and provided a positive, research-based review of the performance and accomplishments of FLVS. Florida TaxWatch is a private, non-profit, organization that provides the citizens of Florida and public officials with research and analysis on how tax dollars are being spent. TaxWatch’s report proved that which was widely assumed, that the Florida Virtual School is not only the epitome of excellence, but is held to the highest of standards.
The evaluation showed that students at Florida Virtual School had higher grades, and scored, on average, better than students at traditional Florida public schools on the FCAT. Students enrolled in the Florida Virtual School were more likely to take an Advanced Placement (AP) class, and on average, scored higher on AP National Exams. Only 15% of the students in the middle school ended their courses with less than a C grade point average.
Over the past ten years, the program at FLVS has expanded rapidly. From 2006, to 2007, there was an enrollment increase of 68%. The report also proved that while the academic standard is higher and students score better with the Florida Virtual School, it ironically also pointed out that it cost almost one thousand dollars less per student to educate them. Rather remarkably, 55% percent of the students at the Florida Virtual School earned an A as opposed to the 39% percent of regular public school students who scored in said range.
Florida Virtual School offers a variety of courses ranging from the arts and the sciences, to the romance languages and history. The program allows for a safe at-home or on the move, working environment. This spectacularly innovative review by Florida TaxWatch reinforces and quantifies the success of Florida Virtual School.
