Florida Virtual School is currently seeking interested subject matter expert contributors with demonstrated subject area mastery and/or professional teaching/industry knowledge. Opportunities for contribution are available in the following areas:

  • Content developers in all subject areas to design, write and review course content and assessments for specific FLVS courses.

POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR CONTENT DEVELOPER SME

Subject Matter Expert - Content Developer Position Description:
The Subject Matter Expert (SME) serving in a content developer role is responsible for designing and writing course content and assessments for specific FLVS courses. In addition to content creation, the SME is responsible for curriculum innovation and for ensuring the highest quality courses for FLVS and its clients/partners. The SME is responsible for assisting in implementing 21st century technology into FLVS content. The SME will be responsible for validating the correctness of the content and/or assessments and providing necessary revisions to ensure the highest quality courses for FLVS and its clients/partners. The SME will be hired on a contract basis for a specific task(s) and will be paid upon completion of those tasks.

Primary Accountabilities/Deliverables:

  • Will develop and write content and assessments that meet state, national, and/or College Board standards while using sound and accepted curriculum pedagogical practices.
  • Review and provide quality assurance testing to validate correctness of content and/or assessments.
  • Review and provide necessary revisions for course content and assessments.
  • Contributes to 21st century technology in FLVS content.
  • Contributes to the revision of externally produced content and resources.
  • Adheres to project timelines.
  • Assists in working with vendors to write FLVS content within project timelines.

Education, Certification, and Work Related Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Education or related area or a minimum of two years experience in the field of curriculum writing and/or designing in the content area.
  • Three or more years of teaching experience preferred.
  • Professional Teaching Certificate preferred.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Comprehensive content knowledge in specific subject area
  • Experience with educational technology, teaching strategies and/or online instructional design
  • Strong oral, written and online communication skills
  • Ability to complete thorough and accurate work
  • Manage time effectively to meet project timelines and produce high quality results

Sample Lesson requirements for Subject Matter Expert – Content Developer

Write a lesson to teach academic content in your specific content area. Your lesson should demonstrate the following:

  • Lesson introduction to gain student’s attention
  • Lesson content, examples and tips written for successful student mastery of lesson’s subject. Content writing should also include where possible the following:
  • Real world connections
  • Out of seat activity (i.e. away from computer) and/or lab (if applicable to your subject area).
    • Creative idea on how to teach the topic on-line (a simulation, interactive or animation idea)
  • Lesson assessment (offline or online)
    • Offline: Authentic assessment which requires students to demonstrate application of topics covered in lesson.
    • Online: An online quiz that checks understanding of topics covered in the lesson. (5 questions will be a sufficient example.)
