Academic Advising: FAQs

Information below is for students in Florida.  Students that live outside Florida should contact their local district for academic advice.

1) I'm a homeschooler in Florida, what do I need to know and do?
Visit the Homeschooler Section of our website and review the information before signing up for a class.

2) What are the academic requirements for 9th grade?
All students must earn the following credits in order to be promoted to the 9th grade:

  • 3 middle school/higher courses in English
  • 3 middle school/higher courses in Math.
  • 3 middle school/higher courses in Social Studies, one semester of which must include the study of state and federal government and civics education.
  • 3 middle school/higher courses in Science.
  • 1 semester long course in career and education planning to be completed in 7th or 8th grade.

For further information please visit the Florida Dept of Education website. The Florida 2006 Legislature passed House Bill 7087 (A++ Plan). With it came the revision of middle school promotion to high school requirements.

3) I'm in middle school how do I know what courses to take?

4) I'm in middle school, can I take High School Courses?
Middle school students are eligible for all middle school courses regardless of grade level. Middle school students may progress in high school level science, foreign language, computer science and math. High school students will be given priority for placement.

5) How can I start to plan for College?

Florida Students:
Check out
www.FACTS.org —an excellent site for career and training information. FACTS.org will help you plan which courses to take in high school. There are three graduation options in Florida. After selecting your option, start planning your 9th grade class schedule. Consider your academic strengths, your goals after high school, and your career interests when selecting your program of study.

All Students:
Take Algebra I, foreign language and computer courses in the 8th grade to better prepare for state university admission requirements and Advanced Placement (AP), dual enrollment, or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses in high school.

6) I'm in high school, where can I find Florida Graduation Requirements?

7) Can I graduate through FLVS with a diploma?
No. FLVS is a solely a curriculum provider, not a diploma granting  institution.  Therefore, students cannot graduate or earn a diploma  through FLVS.  Always check with your local school district and the school in which you are registered to be certain of the specific graduation requirements that govern you.  In some districts there will  be schools with requirements that vary from those of other schools.
