Susan Corson

Spanish I
Florida Virtual School

Susan Corson says that traveling outside the United States is more enjoyable when you know the language of the country you are visiting.  Having studied at the La Sorbonne in Paris, Mrs. Corson has a personal understanding of the value of language skills.  She also has a deep commitment to helping others communicate with understanding.

For more than twenty-two years, Mrs. Corson has fulfilled her personal commitment to teaching.  Her choice to become a teacher was motivated by a desire to share with others the knowledge that was shared with her.  In high school Mrs. Corson studied French. In college she added Spanish.  Whether studying or traveling, she learned to enjoy the culture and color revealed in the words and phrases of each language.

Mrs. Corson taught both Spanish and journalism at Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport, Florida.  She also served as the school’s yearbook advisor for seventeen years and newspaper advisor for sixteen. As a teacher and advisor Mrs. Corson’s love of words resulted in publications that brought pride to her students and her school.  While at Boca Ciega, Mrs. Corson was named outstanding educator four times, and received the distinguished service award from the school's Alumni Association.  She also taught middle school language arts at Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School in Gulfport, and at Transfiguration Catholic School in St. Petersburg, where she also served as librarian.

Mrs. Corson’s decision to join the Florida Virtual School faculty was motivated, in part, by the experience of her sons who have taken FLVS courses.  She especially enjoys the opportunity to provide individualized attention to the needs of her online students.

Mrs. Corson earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Foreign Languages from Mount Mary College in Yankton, South Dakota.  It was her college French teacher, Sister Cynthia Binder, who motivated her to teach foreign languages.  She was also the person who encouraged Susan to spend a semester in Paris.
