Professionalism in any occupation requires knowledge of the job, the skill to do the job, and the desire to excel. At Florida Virtual School, professionalism also involves serving the needs of others. These are the qualities that Rick Perkins models to the more than forty FLVS teachers whom he supports and supervises.
According to Mr. Perkins, Florida Virtual School offers its teachers unique opportunities for professional growth in a dynamic environment. “We support our teachers throughout their careers,” says Mr. Perkins. His goal is to offer students the best possible education from the most talented and effective teachers.
Mr. Perkins brings his own special talents to his job as teacher supervisor and supporter. Describing himself as a “servant leader,” he utilizes his prior experience as an assistant principal, and his earlier experience as a general manger in the hospitality industry. He also brings to his job the sensitivity of a classroom teacher who knows how to engage students.
For four years at Lake Region High School, Mr. Perkins taught English, emphasizing its relevance to success in the real world. For Mr. Perkins, the study of English fosters effective communication skills that are key assets in all professional interactions and in every work situation. Effective communications is also an essential component to his approach to his job as the person who listens to and supports teachers.
