Florida Virtual School

Even in kindergarten, Renee Mitchell was eager to learn as much as she could.  She was just as eager to share what she learned with her fellow students.  Years later, the story remains the same.  From Science, to Math, to English, Mrs. Mitchell’s interests are encyclopedic.  And her desire to share those interests makes her classroom a lively place for animated discussion.

For the past seven years, Mrs. Mitchell’s goal has been to make education a two-way street.  In her class, listening works both ways.  Both students and teacher share ideas and work together to understand new facts and concepts.

Mrs. Mitchell began her career teaching Physical Science in Seminole High School in Seminole County, Florida.  Believing that science offered insights into how the world works, she invited students to observe, analyze and think like scientists.  Later she added Earth/Space Science to her teaching responsibility.  Wanting to enhance her teaching skills, she next became certified as a school guidance counselor.  Later, feeling a desire to return to the classroom, she became certified in math, and completed her final year at Seminole High teaching Algebra I A/B.

In recognition of her ability to engage students in the learning process, Mrs. Mitchell was chosen by Seminole High as its Teacher of the Year in 2005-2006.  In 2004-2005, she was nominated for Who’s Who Among America’s High School Teachers, and was chosen as Teacher of the Week in 2003 by the Orlando Sentinel newspaper.  As a Florida Virtual School teacher, Mrs. Mitchell now realizes her dream of providing one-on-one instruction to each of her students at their own pace, responding to their individual needs.

Mrs. Mitchell earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Earth Science with a minor in English from Michigan State University.  Her certification in School Guidance and Counseling is from Troy University.
