World travel and work in the heart of Wall Street and San Francisco ’s financial districts provide texture and perspective to Oya Mwanza’s teaching. They also provide support for her belief that reading and writing can open doors to a fuller, more creative life experience and a successful, more satisfying career.
Ms. Mwanza’s transition from the corporate world to the classroom was motivated by her desire to share what she has learned, while also giving back to young people who aspire to make their mark in the world. Her decision to join the Florida Virtual School faculty was prompted by her own student-centered approach to teaching that actively involves students in the learning process. She is especially pleased with the opportunity to provide instruction on an individual basis, employing a pacing that suits the needs of each student.
Since making the transition to the classroom five years ago, Ms. Mwanza has enjoyed the satisfaction and creativity of teaching language arts. Her continuing goal has been to “meet students where they are, and help them find their wings and soar!” She believes that real learning takes place when students make the connection between their lessons and their lives.
Prior to joining FLVS, Ms. Mwanza taught on both the middle and high school levels. During that time, she served as the Curriculum Chairperson of her school’s English Department.
Ms. Mwanza earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from St. John’s University ’s College of Insurance in New York State . She has completed graduate level coursework in English Language Arts at the University of Central Florida as well as the six competencies for Reading Instruction Endorsement.
