For National Board Certified Teacher Natine Abreu-Shaw, teaching is a two-way exchange between teacher and students. As a teacher, Ms. Abreu-Shaw shares her knowledge of the content. As a learner, she refines her ability to communicate with students who fuel her passion for learning.
Ms. Abreu-Shaw’s first exposure to teaching occurred when she agreed to facilitate a religious instruction class for a group of 7th graders. Creativity was the asset most needed for engaging her somewhat disinterested audience. The results were weekly sessions enjoyed by both teacher and students, and the birth of her professional teaching career.
Ms. Abreu-Shaw began teaching in a rural K-8 school in Maine where she taught English Language Arts and Social Studies. While there, she participated as a teacher-consultant in the National Writing Project, and was a co-recipient of a $5,000 grant for building an effective peer-mediation program. In Chapel Hill, North Carolina, she served as team leader and writing instructor in a pilot program for retained 5th graders. Her most recent move brought her to Brevard County, Florida where she taught middle school English Language Arts for seven years.
Ms. Abreu-Shaw joined the Florida Virtual School faculty believing online learning to be an essential means for providing instruction in the 21st century. She is also attracted to the FLVS instructional approach because it encourages students to take control of their own learning.
Ms. Abreu-Shaw earned her Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Maine in Orono. Her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education K-8 was awarded by the University of Maine in Farmington. She also values her experiences as a dance instructor at an Arthur Murray studio, her management positions in food service, and her experience in selling radio advertising.
