She has taught in elementary, middle and high school. She is certified to teach subjects ranging from Spanish to math. She was also the project manager of the Human Resources Corporate Training department for Continental Airlines in Houston, Texas. For every student who has ever had Mei-Ling Hickey for a teacher, the experience has been a celebration of knowledge and high expectations.
At every grade level, Mrs. Hickey has created a community of learners who take ownership of their learning. Her talent for generating a positive classroom environment ensures that all students are engaged in effective learning. She is known as a “cheerleader” who motivates a winning attitude from a winning “Learning Team.”
As a native of Puerto Rico, Mrs. Hickey learned both Spanish and English. In the process, she also learned the importance of acquiring bilingual skills in an increasingly multicultural world. As a student, Mrs. Hickey recognized the importance of effective math skills for solving real-life problems. Finally, she values her special skill and ability for making learning exciting and accessible for children, teenagers and adults.
Mrs. Hickey’s varied background and talents resulted in her being chosen as Rookie Teacher of the Year in 2004-2005 by Colonial High School in Orange County, Florida. In the corporate world, she was appointed to the Continental Airline’s Management Association Board as the events director. And while studying at Stetson University, she received the 1997 Ray V. Sowers Award for the most outstanding Elementary Education graduate.
Mrs. Hickey earned her Master of Education degree and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Stetson University. She is certified to teach in Texas and Florida. Both she and her husband enjoy traveling to learn about different cultures. Their young daughter Isabella already loves books, and is working on her English and Spanish vocabulary.
