“There is nothing else in the world I would rather do!” That is how Marie Mitchell describes her reason for becoming a teacher. For the past 12 years, Mrs. Mitchell’s dedication and determination have created powerful learning opportunities for her students, and numerous career milestones for her.
Passion is at the heart of Mrs. Mitchell’s effectiveness. In addition to her excitement for teaching, she is equally passionate about the subject of Social Studies. She believes that our history and system of government are reflections of who we are now, and who we hope to be in the future. Her goal is to help students recognize the personal benefits of living in this country. She also hopes to create an awareness of each student’s personal responsibility for becoming informed citizens and contributing members of society.
Great teachers bring both passion and effectiveness to their work. Early in her career, Mrs. Mitchell was recognized as a Sallie Mae Beginning Teacher recipient. She has received grants and awards including a Superintendent’s grant from Orange County Public Schools. In 1999, she was chosen as her school’s Teacher of the Year. However, she considers as her greatest accomplishment the positive relationships she has forged over the years with her students.
A passion for teaching and the desire to care for her young family are among the factors that led Mrs. Mitchell to Florida Virtual School. She is especially pleased that the flexibility of online teaching allows her to balance her need to teacher with the needs of her family.
Mrs. Mitchell earned her M.S. degree in Social Science Education, and her B.A. degree in Educational Leadership for the University of Central Florida.
