Marcia Truitt

English III
Florida Virtual School

Excellent teaching and excellent teachers are valued by many people.  Students, parents, and teaching colleagues recognize the importance of thoughtful and informed instruction.  Sometimes even television celebrities take notice.  In 2004, the commitment and career of Marcia Truitt were nationally recognized with an acknowledgement on the Oprah Winfrey show.

In addition to national recognition, Ms. Truitt appreciates the times when students thank her for her fairness, consistency and approachability.  They recognize that her heart is in her teaching, and her passion is for great literature.

For thirty-three years, Ms. Truitt has sought to enhance students’ love of reading.  Her decision to teach Language Arts was influenced by a desire to awaken an appreciation of the great ideas available to everyone in the pages of a book.  As a member of the Florida Virtual School faculty, Ms. Truitt enjoys the opportunity to differentiate instruction in a manner that addresses the specific needs of individual students.  Her goal is to allow students the opportunity to achieve mastery of the subject matter, and acquire a lifelong understanding of the power of words.

In addition to teaching at FLVS, Ms. Truitt currently teaches English and Reading at Cambridge Academy of the Miami Lakes Educational Center where she serves as department chairperson.  She has also taught English and served as department chairperson at American High School in Dade County, Florida.  She has been awarded several grants, and serves as a validator of teacher certification exams.

Ms. Truitt earned her Master of Science degree in Reading from Barry University.  Her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education was awarded by the University of Miami.
