Students in Liane McHugh's
English IV course enjoy a valuable instructional benefit: the
one-on-one guidance of a personal writing coach. According to
Ms. McHugh, "The online environment is ideal for providing direct
feedback to students on writing style, content organization,
and clarity." She also believes that "completing assignments
online offers students an effective and safe way to express
personal thoughts and opinions,"
For Ms. McHugh, writing
is a matter of head and heart, technique and inspiration. Clear
writing requires a command of the language, and an ability to
use the style most appropriate to the occasion. Conversely,
compelling writing requires creative thought, and the ability
to make that thought resonate with an audience. Taken together,
these communication skills provide her students with vital assets
for present and future success.
Ms. McHugh says that
the reward of teaching lies in the opportunity to see students
make progress week after week. For her, each completed assignment
graphically demonstrates lessons learned and skills acquired.
She says that, "Students are empowered to take control of their
own learning, right down to accessing their own electronic gradebooks."
As a teacher, Ms. McHugh
combines her zest for learning with a desire to help students
acquire useful skills. In addition, her interest in art provides
color and insight to each lesson she presents.
Ms. McHugh earned her
A.A. degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from the University
of Florida, and her B.A. in English and American Literature
from the University of South Florida.
