Students who “hate reading” or “hate writing” are the perfect candidates for one of Laura Jill Steinig’s classes. Once enrolled, these students quickly discover that there are some really great books that they can really enjoy. They also discover that they themselves can write some really great stories.
One of Ms. Steinig’s most important goals as a teacher is to give students access to one of the greatest pleasures in life. As they read, students recognize the connection between their own stories and the stories of the people portrayed in novels, plays, and biographies. They also discover that great literature can be enjoyed and experienced outside of the classroom.
Ms. Steinig recognized at an early age a nascent desire to teach when she created elementary school assignments and worksheets for her younger brother. She later learned from her high school and college teachers that the core of teaching and learning involves a respectful exchange of ideas. Her teaching is also influenced by her background in Yoga. Complemented by her natural sense of humor, Ms. Steinig’s teaching is characterized by patience, open-mindedness, a positive outlook, and balance.
Ms. Steinig began teaching in 1998 at Highland Park High School in Dallas , Texas , before moving to Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Miami , Florida . She has taught IB, AP and Honors English, and World Literature. She is also certified as a Registered Yoga Teacher. Her skills as a teacher resulted in her being nominated for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 2000 and 2004.
Ms. Steinig earned her Master of Science degree in English Education from Duquesne University . Her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Writing was awarded by the University of Pittsburgh .
