Becoming a teacher has been the dream of Diana Ruiz. From her earliest recollection, she always wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. For the past ten years, the dream of making a difference as a teacher has been a dream come true.
Ms. Ruiz grew up in a family in which English was the dominant language, and Spanish was a second language. She attended college, first in Puerto Rico and then in New York, wanting to perfect her Spanish in order to teach Spanish in the classroom.
Today, Ms. Ruiz approaches teaching as an activity of the heart. It involves a sharing of both knowledge and experiences. For her, teaching involves an equal measure of learning for both teacher and students.
Ms. Ruiz began teaching at Miami Carol City Senior High School in Miami Dade County, Florida. In addition to teaching at Florida Virtual School, she currently serves on the Foreign Language faculty at John A. Ferguson Senior High School. She also taught the Black Male Explorers Program for five years at Florida Memorial University, helping young black student graduate from high school and go on to college. In a similar way, she served as an ASPIRA sponsor, promoting education and leadership development among Puerto Rican and Latino students. Prior to teaching, Ms. Ruiz worked as a law enforcement/U.S. Customs inspector.
Ms. Ruiz began her college degree program at the University of Puerto Rico, and completed her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Education at C.W. Post Long Island University where she graduated Cum Laude.
