When Debbie Brownrigg taught 7th and 8th grade Language Arts in Texas, she helped to oversee and manage a program called Z.A.P., or Zeroes Aren’t Permitted. It involved teachers and students getting together at lunch to catch up on missing work, or to get in some additional instructional time. Throughout her career, making the most out of every opportunity has been a hallmark of Ms. Brownrigg’s approach to teaching.
Ms. Brownrigg entered teaching to share her love of reading, writing and grammar. These were the subjects in which she excelled as a student. Today, these are the same subjects she makes exciting and accessible for her students. Her approach involves creating individual relationships with each student based on honest communication, and on a true understanding of each student’s needs.
In Texas, Ms. Brownrigg taught at the Austin Academy for Excellence, where she also sponsored the cheerleading and pep squads. While there, she was recognized as the 7th grade Teacher of the Year. She has also taught English II and Reading 9-12 at Deltona High School in Volusia County, Florida, and 6th grade Language Arts at Southwest Middle School in Orange County, Florida. She worked her way through high school and college, starting at 16 as a character performer at Walt Disney World.
Ms. Brownrigg joined the Florida Virtual School faculty because of her interest in the online learning format. She values the opportunity to provide individualized instruction that is geared to the needs of each student. She also values the opportunity to involve parents in the educational process.
Ms. Brownrigg earned a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from the University of North Texas. She was awarded an Outstanding Intern award while completing her first graduate degree in Secondary English Education from the University of Central Florida. Ms. Brownrigg earned her undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Florida.
