Amy Heflin loves to talk about fictitious people. Not imaginary people, but the kind of very real characters she and her students encounter in great literature.
While coaching high school swimming, Mrs. Heflin recognized that all teenagers need positive role models, the kind of role models who can offer them both respect and guidance. In a few years, the swimming coach became a high school teacher, but she continued to care about all of her students and their future success.
For the past ten years, Mrs. Heflin has taught at Seminole High School in Pinellas County, Florida. She has been nominated for Who’s Who Among High School Teachers, and has worked on her school’s School Improvement Planning Committee. She is a member of the Pinellas Literacy Council, and has participated in collecting school supplies and books for homeless children living in local shelters.
Mrs. Heflin joined the Florida Virtual School faculty as a way to create supportive, one-on-one relationships with her students. She also appreciates the flexibility provided by FLVS that allows her to spend more time with her five-year-old son.
Mrs. Heflin earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Education from Florida State University, and is currently working toward her ESOL and Reading Endorsements.
